Overriding Lithospheric Strength Affects Continental Collisional Mode Selection and Subduction Transference: Implications for the Greater India–Asia Convergent System

چکیده
The India–Asia collision, starting from 55 ± 5 Ma, leads to the formation of Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau with great gravity potential energy large forces acting on surrounding blocks. However, subduction transference/jump does not occur in southern Indian continental margin or northern oceanic plate as supposed happen repeatedly during preceding Tethys evolution. Instead, collision orogeny continues until present day. total amount convergence has been estimated be ∼2,900–4,000 km needs accommodated by shortening/extrusion and/or Greater plate, which is a challenging issue. In order study mode selection, deformation partition, mass conservation, we integrate reconstruction-based rate into large-scale thermomechanical numerical model systematically investigate effects overriding lithospheric strength convergence. results indicate that absence transference may attributed strain localization shortening rheologically weak plate. case for ∼50 Myr ∼2,900 km, intermediately could reconcile general partition balance Himalayan–Tibetan system. longer period ∼55 significant consistent observations, an basin required continent.

Subduction initiation: spontaneous and induced
The sinking of lithosphere at subduction zones couples Earth’s exterior with its interior, spawns continental crust and powers a tectonic regime that is unique to our planet. In spite of its importance, it is unclear how subduction is initiated. Two general mechanisms are recognized: induced and spontaneous nucleation of subduction zones. Induced nucleation (INSZ) responds to continuing plate c...

S U M M A R Y On Earth, oceanic plates subduct beneath a variety of overriding plate (OP) styles, from relatively thin and negatively buoyant oceanic OPs to thick and neutrally/positively buoyant continental OPs. The inclusion of an OP in numerical models of self-consistent subduction has been shown to reduce the rate that subducting slabs roll back relative to the equivalent single plate model...

After the 1960 M9.5 Valdivia, Chile earthquake, three types of geodetic observations were made during four time periods at nearby locations. These post-seismic observations were previously explained by post-seismic afterslip on the down-dip extension of the 1960 rupture plane. In this study, we demonstrate that the post-seismic observations can be explained alternatively by volumetric viscoelas...

The composition of continental subduction-zone fluids varies dramatically from dilute aqueous solutions at subsolidus conditions to hydrous silicate melts at supersolidus conditions, with variable concentrations of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements. At ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic conditions, supercritical fluids may occur with variable compositions. The water component of these ...
